Go-To Green Smoothie
Iβll preface this post by saying I like my smoothies THICK. Whenever I order a smoothie from a juice shop I always ask for extra frozen banana because the thought of a thin, over-icy smoothie simply does not float my boat. The reason I like a super thick smoothie is because I enjoy eating them with a spoon and savoring my post-workout deliciousness (I eat really slow).
It took a lot of practice, but Iβve mastered the ultimate texture and consistency of my version of a perfect smoothie (thanks to my Vitamix). If youβre a fellow smoothie lover like myself, I highly recommend investing in a Vitamix. Iβve owned many cheap blenders and theyβve all failed me. Even my boyfriendβs Ninja blender just stopped working one day. I think my Vitamix has been used daily since the day I took it out of the box. Itβs pricey but VERY worth it.
This Go-To Green Smoothie is loaded with nutrients, which Iβll break down below, and it keeps me full for hours. I love this smoothie because it feeds my muscles after a workout, allows me to start my day with greens, and it tastes pretty damn good. Make sure to read this entire post for a secret ingredient! ;)
Go-To Green Smoothie (serves 1)
Ingredients:
Β½ frozen banana
Β½ cup water or dairy-free milk of choice
LARGE handful of frozen spinach (like half of the bag)
1 tsp. spirulina
1 tsp. maca powder
1 tbsp. nut butter of choice (Iβm on a major walnut butter kick)
Instructions:
add frozen banana and water/dairy-free milk to a blender and blend to combine. next, add in spinach, spirulina, protein powder, maca, and nut butter and mix to combine
pour into large smoothie glass & enjoy! (my favorite smoothie glasses are these)
Benefits of this smoothie:
banana: Bananas have a healthy amount of potassium, vitamin B-6, vitamin C, and magnesium, and they make the smoothie extra creamy and delicious!
spinach: The key here is that you use frozen spinach so the smoothie is extra thick. Spinach is loaded with calcium, fiber, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin A. Itβs also the easiest way to start your day with a ton of greens!
spirulina: Spirulina is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. I could list all the benefits but there are so many that Iβll just say this loud and clear: BUY IT & ADD IT TO YOUR SMOOTHIE.
vanilla bone broth protein powder: Iβm a huge fan of Ancient Nutritionβs products. This protein powder doesnβt give me that post-protien bloat and itβs also amazing for your joints and muscles because itβs loaded with collagen.
maca powder: Maca is a mood-booster, libido-booster, energy-booster, and helps balance your hormones. It also adds a nutty taste to the smoothie, which I personally love!
nut butter: I was a die-hard almond butter lover for years, but found that the only one that really worked for me was Barney Butter because they use blanched almonds (aka they remove the almond skin). I also found that nut butters are really pricey so Iβve been buying organic walnuts at the store and making my own walnut butter (in my Vitamix, of course)! Walnuts are rich in antioxidants and omega-3s and they help reduce inflammation and promote a healthy gut!
*secret ingredient: add a pinch of salt to your smoothie! yes salt!! it helps bring out the sweetness of the banana!
I also love topping my smoothie with berries or frozen cherries for an extra punch of fiber! :)
